Businesses with employees need to understand the ramifications of the new Department of Labor (DOL) rules regarding exempt and nonexempt employees that take effect Dec. 1, according to Karolynn St-Pierre, a human resources professional who's leading a Wyoming Small Business Development Center webinar titled "Exempt or Non-Exempt: That is the Question" on Thursday, Dec. 1 from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.
The SBDC is a partnership among the University of Wyoming, the Wyoming Business Council and the U.S. Small Business Administration. The SBDC focuses on educating small-business owners and potential owners on how to successfully start and operate small businesses. The SBDC's main office is located at UW.
The differences between exempt and nonexempt employees have always been fuzzy, at best, and now that the DOL is making employee misclassification its top priority, understanding the new rules of the game is a very important priority for employers.
St-Pierre is known for her expertise helping businesses navigate the complexities of human resource management. She has owned Symmetry Consulting LLC since 2009. The company manages HR functions for outside organizations to ensure compliance with labor laws. She also has 15 years of experience working for other large human resource consulting companies, advising Fortune 500 companies, such as Microsoft, Coors, Target and Ford.
