The St. Stephen's boys lost after a buzzer-beater sent the game to the extra period.

Cody Thompson raced past the half-court line and launched an off balance shot in front of the Cody Bronc bench, narrowly beating the buzzer.

The ball arched high in the St. Stephen's gym, glancing off the backboard and through for a game typing 30-foot 3-pointer.

The miraculous shot sent the Cody Junior Varsity into overtime with the St. Stephen's Eagles and the Broncs rode that momentum to a 78-67 win.

The game was the season opener for St. Stephen's after a long series of tournaments.

Cody surprised the Eagles in a 7-0 opening run, but Vincent Brown hit a trey to slow the onslaught briefly. The Broncs came right back on another run, this one 9-0 and threatened to blow the game open.

But, longtime fans of St. Stephen's basketball know the Eagles can score in droves and the final two minutes of the half proved that with an 18-4 run.

Antonio Divers hit a pair of 3-pointers, along with another from Brown.Divers stole an errant pass with four seconds in the half and hit Brown for a buzzer-beating layup that cut the margin to 38-36 at the half.

A trey by Xavier Hubbard knotted the game at 47-47 for the first time, with 1:57 remaining in the third.

The Eagles continued to pull away to a nine-point lead with less than two minutes to play. The rally was highlighted by a Brown-to-Hubbard-to-Nano Spoonhunter fast break that covered the court in three seconds with the ball never touching the floor.

Roberto Hernandez didn't score in the game, but his defense was key in the St. Stephen's rally.

Cody cut the lead to one on offensive rebounds and short-range shots, but Spoonhunter hit both ends of a one-and-one for a 64-61 lead with just four seconds left in the game that set up Thompson's game extending shot.

It was all Cody in the overtime, with freshman Charlie Beaudrie and Jackson Davis scoring, along with Thompson.

St. Stephen's only points came on a Brown 3-pointer.

The Eagles hit a dozen 3-pointers, paced by five from Brown and four from Hubbard, along with a pair by Divers and one by Trenton Friday.

Thompson led all scorers with 28.
