Lady Eagles breeze to No. 1 seed

St. Stephen's will open the Class 1-A West regional tournament against Cokeville.

It was Senior Night at St. Stephen's and the defending state champions took one more step towards a second title with a 58-34 win over conference rival Burlington.

On Saturday, St. Stephen's walloped Meeteetse in Park County 64-29, to move to a perfect 8-0 in the Class 1-A Northwest conference.

The Eagles opened the game with a smothering full-court press and rolled to a huge 18-2 lead behind transition baskets from Kayle Addison, Trinity Goggles and Whisper SunRhodes. Goggles and Addison each hit 3-pointers in the opening minutes, as well.

Burlington was unable to stop the Eagles either inside or out and it looked like a shortened, running clock-style contest was imminent, but St. Stephen's took their foot off the gas in the second half and allowed the Huskies to stay in the game.

Goggles led St. Stephen's with 24 points and Addison added 14.

Saturday's game against Meeteetse was far from typical for the highest-scoring offense in Class 1-A.

Meeteetse slowed the game down and St. Stephen's managed just a single basket by Martina Brown in the opening period as the Longhorns led by the surprisingly low score of 4-2.

"We had a very slow start," said St. Stephen's head coach Mike Redman. "The girls were sleepy form the bus ride and tired from all the excitement of Senior Night. But, we finally got our game and tempo going and got the win."

After the glacial beginning, the Eagles roared to a 21-point second quarter behind 10 points from Goggles and five from Lolena Brown. The duo each hit a 3-pointer in the quarter.

The tempo continued through the final two periods and St. Stephen's emerged with the win.

The Eagles have not lost a conference game since the 2014-15 season.

Goggles paced St. Stephen's, outscoring Meeteetse by herself with 30 points, including a trio of 3-pointers.

The Eagles take the top seed from the Class 1-A Northwest into an opening-round game against Cokeville, fourth from the Southwest, at 2 p.m. on the auxiliary gym floor at Bob Carey Memorial Fieldhouse in Lander.
