Riverton cowgirl starts season No. 1 in state

Riverton cowgirl Elsie Campbell enters the spring high school rodeo season No. 1 in the breakaway competition.

The spring season begins Saturday and Sunday in Laramie.

After three fall rodeos, Campbell has scored 27 points. The rodeos were held in Wheatland, Lander and Jackson.

Sundance's Peggy Garman is second with 24 points. Justene Hirsig from Cheyenne is third at 22 points.

Kate Dickinson from Rock Springs is fourth (21 points).

The top four cowgirls and cowboys in each event qualify for the National High School Finals Rodeo.

The NHSFR is July 12 to July 18 in Rock Springs.

County performances

Campbell is sixth in goat tying with 22.50 points. Lander's Sierra Lyons is 13th with nine points.

In steer wrestling, Riverton cowboy Coleter Jordan is standing sixth with 18 points. Deni Lou Nicholls from Kinnear has earned enough points to be fifth in pole bending after scoring 22 points. Campbell is sixth (17 points).

Fort Washakie's Jared Noseep placed fourth after the fall season scoring 19 points. Gillette's Ty Bertrand is first at 23 points.

Schedule

The rodeos slated in the spring season after Laramie are Rock Springs (April 17-19), Big Piney (April 25-26), Newcastle (May 2-3), Gillette (May 9-10), Casper (May 16-17), Buffalo (May 23), Sheridan (May 24-25) and Douglas (May 30-31).

The state finals are June 10 to June 13 in Douglas.
