One dead, others injured in one-vehicle accident Saturday north of Lander

A Fort Washakie man died Saturday in a single-vehicle crash north of Lander.

Sonny J. Duran, 26, of Fort Washakie, suffered fatal injuries at the scene of the crash, which was reported at about 7:25 p.m. Saturday on Wyoming Highway 132 about 21 miles north of Lander.

Officials said he was driving north in a 2003 Nissan sedan when the car drifted off the right shoulder of the highway.

"The Nissan was overcorrected and eventually entered the southbound ditch, where the vehicle tripped and rolled," a Wyoming Highway Patrol press release stated.

Duran was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected during the crash.

Six passengers in the car also were not wearing seatbelts: Emanual Duran, 27, of Fort Washakie, was transported by ground ambulance to SageWest Health Care at Lander where he was treated and released; Forrest Duran of Fort Washakie was flown by air ambulance to Casper, where he was hospitalized; Lucinda Wallowingbull of Fort Washakie was taken by ground ambulance to SageWest Health Care at Riverton where she was treated and released; Clayton Wallowingbull of Fort Washakie was transported by ground ambulance to SageWest Health Care at Lander where he was treated and released; William Spoonhunter of Fort Washakie was taken by ground ambulance to SageWest Health Care at Lander where he was hospitalized; and Cini White of Fort Washakie was taken by ground ambulance to SageWest Health Care at Riverton where she was hospitalized.

Alcohol use, driver distraction and speed are all being investigated as contributing factors in this crash.
