Chiefs advance with win over Rocky Mtn.Feb 26, 2016 By Randy Tucker Staff Writer
A strong third period lifted third-seeded Wyoming Indian over No. 2 Rocky Mountain out of the Northwest 66-49 in opening-round Class 2-A West regional tournament action at Central Wyoming College.
The win pits the Chiefs against Wind River for the fourth time this season at 7:30 on Friday at Wolverine Gym in Riverton.
Cole Wambeke hit a 3-pointer to open a slow-scoring first period that was promptly answered by Joe Sazue, and a long-range shooting contest ensued. Cole Simmons and Cordell McFarland each hit a trey for the Grizzlies in the opening half. For the Chiefs, Buell Robinson hit a pair, with Ryan Tiger adding another and Sazue scoring his second late in the half.
While the long-distance game was impressive, the other shooting wasn't so effective, with both teams taking two and three shots to hit on offensive rebounds.
The short-range challenge came as both teams played challenging, physical defense in the paint.
Three ties and an equal number of lead changes was finally broken after Sazue took a charge from McFarlane and the Chiefs rallied on a 10-3 run to end the half.
The Chiefs hit the gas to open the second half on a 10-0 run.
Jared Mosqueda hit a pair of power shots over the taller Grizzlies, and Sazue added two more treys, the second a towering, 27-foot bomb from near the scorer's table that prompted a Rocky Mountain timeout with the Chiefs on top 41-24.
The Chiefs traded baskets over the final 12 minutes of the game. Robinson highlighted the fourth quarter with a floating shot that drew in all the Grizzly defenders. As they closed, he tossed a soft lob to a wide open Tiger for the easy layup.
Only four Chiefs scored in the game, with Robinson's 22 leading the way. Sazue scored 20, with five 3-pointers, and Mosqueda had a solid 19.Tiger rounded out the scoring with five.
Wambeke paced Rocky Mountain with 10, including 8-10 from the free-throw line.
