Lady Chiefs win squeaker over Thermop, 58-53

Feb 26, 2016 By Randy Tucker Staff Writer

It was a roller coaster ride for the Wyoming Indian girls in their opening-round 58-53 win over a feisty Bobcat team from Thermopolis.

The win moved the Cougars to an afternoon semi-final game against Greybull at 3 p.m. Friday at Riverton High School.

The Lady Chiefs opened the game with ease, breezing to 10-0 lead on a pair of close-range shots, a free throw by Rhiannon Mitchell, and a layup and 3-pointer from high-scoring Amryn Brown.

Thermopolis head coach Cory Sova has 31 years of coaching experience, and a quick timeout settled the Bobcats down. They battled back on a run of their own to knot the game at 16-all early in the second period.

Haley McDermott fueled the run with 13 first-half points, including a pair of 3-pointers.

McDermott finished with a game-high 22 points, including 10-of-12 shooting from the free-throw line.

Thermopolis built its largest lead of the game at 26-21 on a Randi Elisson 3-pointer with 3:31 left in the opening half, but the Chiefs held their ground. A turnaround shot by Elsie Marquez ended the half with the Chiefs trailing 31-28.

It took Morning Gambler 14 seconds to tie the game with an opening 3-pointer in the third period, but Thermopolis quickly regained the lead and held it through the quarter.

A buzzer-beating shot by Ashlyn Weber glanced off the backboard and dropped through for a 40-35 Bobcat lead with eight minutes to play.

Then Wyoming Indian rallied on a 6-0 run to open the final period, highlighted by a Shauntae St. Clair steal and outlet to Brown, who hit Mitchell for a layup that gave the Chiefs a 41-40 lead.

Wyoming Indian head coach Aleta Moss changed her offensive strategy in the final period and took the ball directly to the post behind St. Clair and freshman Alex Trosper.

The duo accounted for 10 of Wyoming Indian's 23 fourth-quarter points.

Brown paced the Chiefs with 18, while Trosper and Mitchell each scored 10. Ellison joined McDermott in double-figures for Thermopolis with 13.
