Eagles fade following opening win in 1-AMar 6, 2016 By Randy Tucker Staff Writer
St. Stephen's followed up a first-round victory against Lingle-Fort Laramie with a pair of losses.
CASPER -- After an opening round win over Lingle-Fort Laramie, it was a quick two-and-out for the St. Stephen's Eagles in Class 1-A state tournament action.
St. Stephen's fell by 20 to Upton on Friday night, then dropped the third-place game late Saturday afternoon at Casper College to the Kaycee Buckaroos, 65-48
Foul trouble was endemic for the Eagles from the first minutes of the game. St. Stephen's was flat-footed and looked tired, playing the classic role often attributed to a third- place game at state following a semifinal loss.
Kaycee took an early lead and built a double-digit margin by the half, while Eagle seniors Miklo Oldman and Derrick Williams each picked up their fourth foul in the second period. Both fouled out in the third, leaving the Eagles front line to younger players.
Silas SunRhodes and Cody Headley worked well in pressing the Buckaroos and Jaron Arthur had his typically excellent game in the low post, hitting 23 points on a variety of step-through, fade away and up-and-under moves, but it wasn't enough.
The Eagles fouled early and often, with most coming as Kaycee shot the ball.
St. Stephen's was whistled for 27 personal and one technical foul and Kaycee hit 26-of-42 attempts from the line to take the win.
Leading by 14, Kaycee senior Taylor Rouse broke open on a fast break and pounded the ball through on a thunderous dunk that even the Eagles fans in attendance applauded.
Oldman joined Arthur in double figures with 10.
Upton 81, St. Stephen's 61
Upton put 50 points on the board in the middle two periods and ended the St. Stephen's hope of state-championship berth against rival Burlington in an 81-61 semifinal loss at Casper College.
The Eagles were out rebounded 43-30 in the game, and 15 of those were second shots by the Bobcats that either scored or drew fouls from Eagles defenders.
The usual high-scoring St. Stephen's offense was virtually nonexistent in the opening minutes of the game.
Miklo Oldman scored on a full-court drive, but that was the only offense as Upton built an 8-0 lead largely on the play of high-flying forward Lance Garland.
The Eagles flew a bit themselves after head coach Ricky Blackburn called a time out to refocus his team.
On the ensuing possession, Oldman lobbed the ball high on the backside of the rim and Jaron Arthur caught it in mid-flight and scored on the play. The period ended on a similar play with Oldman sizzling an angle pass to Arthur for a 13-10 Upton lead.
Arthur hit a trey that tied the game nine seconds into the second period and the game was tied once more at 15, but Upton began to take control inside and out.
Garland, Dillon Barritt and Payton Watt all hit 3-pointers, and Upton quickly built a 14-point lead.
Antonio Divers scored on a fadeaway follow shot at the buzzer to cut the gap to 12, but momentum remained with the Bobcats.
Upton took a 20-point lead with 3:49 left in the third and never let up, preventing a St. Stephen's comeback with solid half-court defense and an opportunistic inside/outside approach on the other end of the floor.
Arthur paced St. Stephen's with 22, while Williams scored 14.
