Area churches abound with Christmas observances

Fremont County churches offer many different ways to celebrate this weekend.

Churches are opening their doors to everyone for special services on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.


Hillcrest Baptist Church in Riverton Christmas Eve service is at 6 p.m. Saturday, with a 10:45 worship services on Christmas Day.

Lighthouse Bible Church's Christmas Eve service is at 5 p.m. at the church, located at 1510 Lewis Street in Riverton. The service includes a children's music program "Mary Did You Know?" Lighthouse Bible Church will have regular Sunday services at 10:30 a.m. Christmas day with Sunday School at 9:30 a.m. The Church has been in the community for 6 years, but this will be its first Christmas in its new, permanent location.

The Neighborhood Alliance Church Christmas Eve Candlelight Service featuring the children's musical "The First Leon" is from 6-7:30 a.m. at the church, located at 440 Riverview Road. The musical tells the story of Leon, a boy who has felt called to tell the story and meaning of Christmas when he discovered that his name spelled backwards is Noel. But Leon must discover the meaning himself when he is not cast in the Christmas pageant.

The Riverton First Baptist Church's Christmas Eve celebration is at 6:30 p.m. at 830 North First Street, at the corner of First Street and Sunset Drive. The church's Christmas morning service begins at 10:15 a.m. Children are encouraged to come in their pajamas and adults are welcome to attend in theirs, too.

"We said, 'let's keep it really simple,'" senior pastor Rex Whitman said.

Whitman will tell the story of Christmas from his rocking chair, the final candle on the advent wreath will be lit, chrismon ornaments will be hung on the tree and hot chocolate and refreshments will be served.

Whitman said the service is family-oriented and will last about 45 minutes.

St. Margaret's in Riverton Vigil Christmas Eve vigil/children's mass at 5:30 p.m. and a midnight at the church located at 622 East Park Avenue. St. Margaret's will also host masses at 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. on Christmas Day.

The Cherry Bombs roller derby girls are serving lunch at noon on Christmas Eve at Riverton City Park for anyone who is hungry and wants to join. Everyone is welcome to help serve or eat.


Everyone is welcome to attend The Lander First Baptist Church's Christmas Eve celebration, for carols and a candle service is at 6:30 p.m. at the church, located on the corner of Third Street and Sweetwater Street in Lander.

The High Mountain Cowboy Church, in conjunction with New Hope Christian Church will host Christmas Eve and Christmas morning services at the New Hope Christian Church, located at 630 Mount Hope Drive in Lander.

The Christmas Eve service will be from 6:30-7 p.m. with the story of the birth of Jesus. Christmas Day services will be at 10:30 a.m., with special music and presentations.

"Pastor Allen (Upshaw) is going to be singing and he's awesome," Sue Upshaw of High Mountain Cowboy Church said.

Around the County

Our Lady of the Woods, located at 4 South Riverton Street in Dubois will have a vigil mass at 5 p.m. Christmas Eve and an 8 a.m. mass on Christmas Day.

St. Joseph's Church in Shoshoni has a Christmas Day mass at noon at the church, located at 211 Wyoming St. in Shoshoni.

St. Edward's in Kinnear canceled its Christmas Day mass.
