Rough weekend for Lady Blue

Feb 19, 2017 By Randy Tucker, Staff Writer

Shoshoni drooped games to Lovell and Rocky Mountain and now have a play-in game against Riverside.

It wasn't the weekend the Shoshoni girls were looking for. On Friday night, they had the chance to avoid a Monday play-in game with a win over Lovell, a team they beat at home just two weeks ago, but the Bulldogs were too much for Lady Blue and Shoshoni fell, 42-25.

On Saturday, they dropped their second game of the weekend in a 53-41 loss to Rocky Mountain that rounded out the regular season.

The Lovell loss moved Shoshoni into a play-in game against Riverside on Monday night at 7 p.m.

The game will be the third of the evening, with Dubois hosting Ten Sleep in Class 1-A boys action at 4 p.m., followed by the Shoshoni boys playing winless Riverside at 5:30 p.m.

Shoshoni shot very poorly from the perimeter despite repeated mid and long-range attempts and hit just ix 2-point and a pair of 3-point baskets in the Lovell game, with both of those coming from freshman Gheniece Medicine Cloud.

The icy shooting went to arctic levels in the third, when Shoshoni tallied just a single point on the first of a pair of free throws by senior forward Tammy Maddock.

Shoshoni 41

On Saturday, Shoshoni battled the conference-champion Grizzlies well at times after Rocky took an early lead.

Medicine Cloud hit a 3-pointer with 2:45 remaining in the first that knotted the game at 10-10, but Rocky quickly rebuilt a six- point lead.

Lady Blue closed to three points on a Medicine Cloud layup, but each time Shoshoni threatened to retake the lead, Rocky Mountain hit an outside shot.

Brianna Thompson tallied eight of Shoshoni's 10 points in the third period, but Rocky kept marching to the free-throw line after penetrating deep into the paint and getting fouled.

Rocky Mountain doesn't score a lot of points in most games, but their defense is solid and a series with 1:25 left in the third period was indicative of the entire game.

Thompson was pressured and couldn't get the ball into play, finally bouncing it between Gabby Christensen's legs while trying to bounce it off her. Brenda Timmons stole the pass and was fouled by Medicine Cloud on the ensuing layup.

Rocky pulled steadily away in spite of an excellent offensive move by Whispe Pingetzer, who drove down the lane and pulled up for an apparent jump shot, but tossed the ball down the lane to Maddock for an easy basket.

Thompson led Shoshoni with nine points, while Maddock finished with eight.

A win against Riverside pits Shoshoni in a 2:30 p.m. game Thursday against Class 2-A Southwest champion Wyoming Indian at Riverton High School.
