Lady Blue beats Rebels, 59-35

Feb 21, 2017 By Randy Tucker, Staff Writer

Tammy Maddock led Shoshoni with 18 points in a play-in victory against Riverside.

Shoshoni's girls survived a sluggish start to take a 59-35 win over Riverside in play-in regional tournament action Monday in Shoshoni.

The win sends Lady Blue to a 2:30 p.m. game Thursday against Class 2-A Southwest champion Wyoming Indian at Wolverine Gym in Riverton in the first round of the Class 2-A West regional.

Shoshoni didn't play well in the opening two periods, taking perimeter shots over close-range options in the post and committing plentiful turnovers against a feisty Riverside squad.

Shoshoni's trio of post players Tammy Maddock, Jalene Hanway and Ashley Steffen touched the ball just twice each in the opening half and took only a combined two shots they weren't fouled on.

Riverside stayed in the game on follow shots and could have led handily at the half, but the Rebels missed a combined 10 free throws in the first and second periods.

Shoshoni head coach Max Mills emphasized getting the ball to the post in the second half, and the girls responded. Hanway and Maddockcombined to hit six shots from the low block in the final 16 minutes of play.

With the big girls scoring inside, the perimeter opened up. Rachel Goff found the range, hitting three 3-pointers, with another coming from freshman Gheniece Medicine Cloud.

The inside/outside game was too much for Riverside, and Shoshoni blew open the tight game behind a 24-point outburst in the third period, one of the best offensive displays of the entire season.

Maddock paced Shoshoni with 18 points, while Goff tallied 12.Medicine Cloud finished with nine points, and Steffen went 7-8 from the free-throw line.
