Wranglers roll over Riverside; faces WR at regionalFeb 21, 2017 By Randy Tucker, Staff Writer
Gary Medicine Cloud led Shoshoni with 17 points in a play-in game rout of Riverside.
Pregame music tends towards hip-hop and rap these days, but Monday's play-in game between Shoshoni and Riverside would have played out much better to the lyrics from "Mercy Mercy Me" by the legendary Marvin Gaye.
The Wranglers blew out the Rebels twice in the regular season, but Class 2-A Northwest conference rules call for the fourth- and fifth-place teams to face each other in a play-in-style qualifying game the Monday of regional tournament play.
Shoshoni was as dominant as a basketball team could possibly be in the opening half of a 60-22 rout.
Shoshoni blew to a 38-0 lead before the Rebels finally scored on a pair of follow shots in the in the final seconds of the half. SHS led 40-4 at the break.
Physically, Shoshoni was six to eight inches taller and 40-50 pounds heavier than their Rebel counterparts.
Most of the time, the game looked like seniors against fifth- or sixth- graders.
Shoshoni's phenomenal point guard, Gary Medicine Cloud, is the shortest of the Wranglers starting five at 6 feet, and he towered over the Rebels' post.
J.J. Pingetzer, a 6-foot-1 senior, opened the game with five straight points to build a quick 5-0 lead for the Wranglers. The onslaught continued with Anthony Cousineau scoring in the paint and Wade Cornell and Medicine Cloud each hitting treys.
The duo finished with eight long-range shots. Medicine Cloud hit five 3-pointers and Cornell three as Shoshoni raced toward a 40-point lead and a running clock.
The mercy rule only goes into effect in the second half, but it took the Wranglers just 2:25 of the third period before a Pingetzer follow shot moved the score to 46-6, and the clock quickly ran the game out.
Shoshoni reserves played the entire accelerated final period.
Medicine Cloud paced the Wranglers with 17 points, while Cornell scored 13.
