Daylon Shoyo led Wind River with 16 points in a victory over the Wranglers.

Shoshoni head coach Brady Slack had a solid strategy against high-flying Wind River in opening- round Class 2-A West regional action at Riverton High School late Thursday afternoon, but strategy isn't always enough in the face of overwhelming talent.

Wind River pulled away from Shoshoni's deliberate strategy to take a 51-29 win and advance to a 7:30 p.m. semifinal game against Rocky Mountain at Riverton High School on Friday.

Shoshoni faces Big Piney at 1 p.m., also at Wolverine Gym.

The Wranglers broke into a four-corners style offense, reminiscent of Princeton University before the advent of the shot clock.

Four players positioned on the boundaries of the half-court with the other cutting across the baseline in time with the ball.Anthony Cousineau scored on one of these baseline cuts and Zach Pickinpaugh on another as the Wranglers took a 4-0 lead.

Wind River's outside threat, Daylon Shoyo, hit a towering 3-pointer to cut the margin to one, but Shoshoni's continued working their deliberate offense with Pickinpaugh scoring on a backdoor cut and Gary Medicine Cloud driving down the lane for an 8-3 lead at the end of the first.

Wind River is a talented, multi-faceted team and they displayed their prowess in the second period on an 18-0 run that nearly blew the game open.

Jarrick Trumbull hit a layup, Jayin Trumbull scored on two follow shots, Shoyo drilled a pair of threes and Xavior Oats added another and Shoshoni's strategy was shredded.

Medicine Cloud scored on a drive with four seconds left in the half to prevent the shutout in the period.

Shoshoni closed to a seven-point deficit in the third period, but that was it for the Wranglers.

Shoyo hit five 3-pointers on the game and led all scorers with 16 points, while Jayin Trumbull added 12.

Medicine Cloud led the Wranglers with 15 points.
