Cougars blow out Upton, 78-60

Mar 2, 2017 By Randy Tucker, Staff Writer

Jarick Trumbull led Wind River with 21 points in a Class 2-A state opening-round win against Upton.

Sometimes a little time on the pine is a good thing for a basketball team.

After a lethargic start in Thursday afternoon' s opening-round game with the Upton Bobcats, Wind River head coach Justin Walker pulled three of his starters and sent reserves Ryan Jordan, Jackson Clair and Dalton Finley onto the floor.

The lift sparked Wind River to a 78-60 opening-round win.

The Cougars trailed by five several times in the opening minutes, but the substitution sparked Wind River, starting with a Jordan jump shot and the gap closed to 16-14 with 2:10 remaining in the opening period.

It was part Cougars laziness on defense and perhaps Upton's excellent team quickness that made the remainder of the half a close contest.

Taylor Tidzump scored on a soft dunk that narrowly beat the buzzer to end the first with the Cougars trailing, 22-18.

Tidzump and Jayin Trumbull assumed their familiar roles, dominating in the paint in the second with excellent play in the post.

Perhaps the most amazing play of the game came when Jarick Trumbull chased down a loose ball, threw it blindly over his head and Tidzump ran down the ball. Tidzump then gained controlled, did a drop step and spun in on a post move that tied the game at 32-32.The half ended with the game knotted at 34-34.

Jarick Trumbull was the catalyst in the second half. The 6-foot sophomore scored inside, outside and off the dribble to pace a furious Wind River surge in the final 16 minutes. Trumbull finished with a game-high 21 points.

Back-to-back 3-pointers from Xavior Oats and Jarick Trumbull lifted the Cougars to their first double-digit lead at 44-34.

Tidzump picked up his third foul with 3:36 left in the third, but the Cougars didn't miss a beat.

Oats and both Trumbulls took over the game and sophomore Daylon Shoyo coolly hit three straight free throws after being fouled beyond the arc to move the lead to 14.

Dalton Finley scored a steal and a blistering fast- break layup to put the Cougars up by 21 and they cruised to the win.

Wind River never looked back and awaits the winner of the Rocky Mountain/Pine Bluffs game in a 7:30 p.m. semifinal on Friday at the Casper Events Center.

Jayin and Jarick Trumbull paced the Cougars with 21 points each, with Tidzump pouring in 18.

The Cougars shot just four free throws, but made them all.

Upton hit nine 3-pointers on the game, with Dillon Barritt accounting for four of those. Payton Watt led the Bobcats with 16 points, Clayton Louderback scored 14 and Barritt 12.
