Riverton High School speakers win state championship

Riverton High School's speech and debate team in the 2017 Class 3-A state champion.

The Wolverine speakers placed first March 9-11 at the state meet in Green River. The season began in November.

The RHS team, coached by Annette Thornton, built the state championship in interpretation events this year. Nic Fenton won in humorous interpretation, and Heather McLaughlin placed sixth overall and second in 3-A.

Joseph Thornton and Katarina Tyler were semifinalists in the event.

Tyler was the Class 3-A state champion in dramatic interpretation, ending up second overall. Thornton was an overall semifinalist and second in Class 3-A.

McLaughlin and Fenton were first in Class 3-A with their duet interpretation piece, finishing third overall.

This year, the state tournament falls one week before the National Forensic League district tournament in Casper.

District winners will advance to the national tournament June 18-23 in Birmingham, Alabama.
