Crawling crawdad

Apr 19, 2017 Photo by Randy Tucker

A female crawdad laden with eggs sought cover last weekend on the Boysen Reservoir shoreline. Also called crayfish, the creature is a reclusive freshwater crustacean resembling a small lobster. They are water creatures that breathe through gills. Crawdads typically reach a length of 6-7 inches, but this one was about 8 inches. It was returned to the water unharmed.
