The way it was: Lander-Riverton cheerleaders -- 1953

Nov 18, 2013 - Staff

In the years before the modern playoff system, the high school football season in Fremont County started later than it does today -- usually in the second weekend of September -- and continued well into November. Riverton and Lander often played a game on Armistice Day (now Veterans Day) on Nov 11, even if they had already played earlier in the season, and conference championship games sometimes stretched as late at Thanksgiving Day.

In 1953, the annual Lander-Riverton clash on Nov. 7 featured a friendly pre-game meeting between the cheerleaders of the two schools on the sidelines at Tonkin Stadium in Riverton. Wearing the big "R" emblems, from left, were Janet Bath, Barbara Brennan and Karen Smith, with little Jerry Davison the junior mascot.

As for the four Lander cheerleaders, the photographer didn't identify them at the time.

Readers, help us identify the Lander girls, and we will run the picture again with the full identifications.
