Park to charge for backcountry trips

Nov 20, 2013 - The Associated Press

JACKSON -- Grand Teton National Park will raise the back country camping permit fee to $25 for walk-ins and $35 for permits purchased in advance starting Jan. 5.

For years, the permits were free to acquire in person and $25 in advance.

Grand Teton spokeswoman Jackie Skaggs says other national parks charge fees for backcountry permits.

Skaggs said the money raised from fees will go toward maintaining back country resources and education.

In addition to the changes to backcountry stays, Grand Teton has increased its permit rates for a number of other special uses such as weddings and commercial filming.

Scattering ashes and Freedom of Information Act requests remain free.

The new prices will take effect early next year.
