The way it was: Cheerleaders identified -- 1953

Nov 24, 2013 - Staff

Last weeks' "The Way it Was" photo is reprinted this week, with one important difference -- everyone is identified.

We asked readers last Sunday to help with identification of all the cheerleaders picture, and at least seven contacted us to assist.

An interesting development accompanied the identification process. Three of the seven reader helpers claimed that the picture actually is from 1954, not 1953.

But the picture was published on Nov. 10, 1953, at halftime of the Lander-Riverton football game at Tonkin Stadium in Riverton (the Wolverines prevailed 25-6 to wrap up an underwhelming season for both teams). Perhaps readers were remembering a high school graduation year of 1954, which would have included a fall football season that ended in November of 1953.

Pictured from left here at halftime of that 1953 game, from left, were Janet Bath of Riverton, Della Goodwin and Joyce Rutherford of Lander, Barbara Brennan of Riverton, Patsy Warren of Lander, Karen Smith of Riverton and Mary Hart of Lander, with little Jerry Davison the junior mascot.

Thanks to all who assisted.
