Online petition set up for District 21

Fort Washakie Charter High School principal Shad Hamilton has created an online petition to show support for Fremont County School District 21's efforts to unify Fort Washakie School into a K-12 district.

The petition will accompany the district's application, which will go before the Wyoming State Board of Education on April 27 in Gillette.

Hamilton said the petition was created in response to the Fremont County Boundary Board's recommendation to seek and document more county and statewide support during a public hearing March 26.

"I thought it might be an easy, convenient way for folks to demonstrate support," Hamilton said, adding that he's never attempted an online petition before. "We've also been employing more traditional means -- e-mails, letters and phone calls. Our superintendent (Richard McClements) has requested letters of support from all of Fremont County's school districts."

As of Tuesday afternoon, the petition consisted of 50 signatures from Fort Washakie residents, teachers, administrators and others outside the district.

Support is also coming from other Fremont County school districts.

"On behalf of Fremont County School District #2 and its board of education we whole-heartedly support this petition on behalf of FCSD #21," Dubois superintendent Gerry Noland wrote.

Others who have already signed the petition include Shoshoni superintendent Tammy Cox, Lander school board member Joe Palladino and school personnel from Lander and Arapaho.

"I fully endorse the unification of Fremont County School District #21," wrote Arapaho Charter High School principal Mel Miller. "As a principal of a charter school in Fremont County I am very aware of the problems and issues that confront a non-unified school district. Unification is the best way to improve the education of all students within the district since it provides seamless K through 12 programming."

The online petition includes the background information about Fort Washakie's efforts in being unified. It is one of two K-8 school districts in Wyoming. The other district is Fremont County School District 38 at Arapahoe.
