Riverton Middle School track and its 100 runners open year

Apr 5, 2012 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

Riverton Middle School track and field coach Travis McIntosh has nearly 100 athletes out for the 2012 season.

The squad is made up of eighth-, seventh- and sixth-graders.

The Spartans have participated in meets in Green River and Rawlins.

"They are getting better every day, and listening to their coaches," McIntosh said.

RMS meet April 14

The Spartans host the Riverton Invitational on Saturday, April 14, at Wolverine Track.

"We expect to have nine teams at the meet," McIntosh said.

The two Casper schools, Rock Springs, Green River and Lander are expected.

"We will have a good mixture of teams coming in," McIntosh said.

McIntosh's assistants are Susie Piplica (distance), Carol Ann Stingley (distance), Brian Shultz (hurdles and sprints), Paul Rogers (discus) and Phil Orbell (shot put).

"We have a great staff," McIntosh said. "They are easy to work with, and everybody gets along. We want to see the kids improve and see them get something out of track and field."

RMS squad

Riverton eighth-grader Tristen Smith won the 800 meters at the seven-team Green River meet March 29 with a time of 2:36.08. The Spartans finished fourth in the boys team standings.

"We have a pretty good mixture of athletes in the eighth grade," McIntosh said. "We have some pretty good sprinters, and we have some pretty good hurdlers. We have some kids that are good in the jumping events. They are strong in the distance events. They are a well-rounded team."

RMS eighth grader Jordan Shells captured the 100-meter hurdles (18.16) to help her squad place fifth.

"We don't have a lot of distance runners, but there are a lot of sprinters," McIntosh said. "That is our smallest group of numbers, but they are able to compete in the team scores."

The RMS seventh grade boys finished second in the team standings in Green River.

Hunter Lee finished first in the shot put (31-1) and Jacob Bench took the 800 meters (2:54.83).

"We have more numbers on the seventh grade boys side, so that creates more depth," McIntosh said. "We are still trying to figure out where everybody fits."

RMS seventh grader Nancy Webb won the long jump (13-5.50), triple jump (26-7.50) and the 400 meters (1:12.87).

The points helped RMS place second in the team standings.
