Clerk warns about illegal voter sign-up

Apr 5, 2012 - By Emily Etheredge, Staff Writer

A citizen notified officials that a man has been performing illegal voter registration activities. He was observed outside the Safeway in Riverton in recent days.

Fremont County Clerk Julie Freese wants citizens to know that what this person was doing is illegal by Wyoming law.

"The only people who can do voter registration drives in Wyoming are county clerks and people designated by the county clerks," Freese said

When county clerks have voter registration drives, they advertise and clearly mark the area as Fremont County Elections. They are also able to supply credentials as requested.

"If anyone gave this person any personal information, we won't know what he will do with that," Freese said. "We really want to warn people to know about this."

Voter registration may be done by going to the County Courthouse in Lander, the Riverton County Clerk's office on South Federal Boulevard, the Riverton City Hall, the Pavillion, Hudson, Shoshoni and Dubois town halls and the Northern Arapaho Tribal Office in Ethete.

"Individuals will be asked to show a Wyoming driver's license or other photo identification," Freese said.

If anyone has any information about this incident, call the Riverton Police Department at 856-4891 or Julie Freese at 332-1122.
