CWC women get first home game Friday vs. Dawson
Dec 4, 2013 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor
After playing their first eight games on the road, the Central Wyoming College women's basketball team opens the home season at 5:30 p.m. Friday vs. Dawson Community College.
The Rustlers were slated to play Region IX conference opponent Little Big Horn on Wednesday night in Montana, but that contest was postponed due to weather and travel restrictions.
The women's game starts a doubleheader Friday at Rustler Gym, with the men's game to follow.
CWC is 0-1 in Region IX play after losing to Miles Community College.
"We need to get out and defend our home court for the first time this year," CWC women's coach Serol Stauffenberg said.
CWC is 5-3 on the season.
"We do the bigger things well right now in getting and taking quality shots, and defending," Stauffenberg said. "We don't do the small things very well, though, in offensive rebounding, defensive rebounding, and general aggressiveness. As soon as we figure the little things out we will be much better off."
CWC picked up two wins last week during a tournament at Western Wyoming Community College in Rock Springs.
The Rustlers knocked off the Utah all-stars 64-57 and Wyoming all-stars 84-60.
"I thought that we played well as could be expected," Stauffenberg said. "I let the players go home for Thanksgiving on Wednesday to enjoy time with family."
Dawson has posted a 5-1 overall record.
The Rustlers return to the court at 5 p.m. on Saturday with nationally ranked Western Nebraska Community College.
Western edged CWC 56-51 on Nov. 13 in Scottsbluff, Neb.
Western is ranked No. 15 in the latest National Junior College Athletic Association women's basketball poll with a 9-2 record.
