Write to Santa

Dec 5, 2013 By Steven R. Peck

We're planning our 65th Christmas Greetings Edition, and we need letters

It's December, the lights are up, the giant snowflakes are glowing on Main Street, and it's cold as Christmas out there. (Temperature in downtown Riverton as these words click across the keyboard: 11 below zero.)

Naturally, thoughts turn to the North Pole.

It's been 64 years since our family-owned newspaper, then known as The Riverton Times, published its first letter to Santa Claus from a local child.

Since then, we've printed nearly 20,000 more.

Now it's Santa letter season again, and if you're writing the big guy up north, The Ranger is the place to be.

We'll probably top that 20,000 all-time mark this year -- if we get another good crop of letters. So start writing.

No matter what the count comes to this year, your Santa letter will be a treasured part of our 65th newspaper Christmas season as your locally-owned, locally-printed community newspaper. It's a role we cherish and protect.

How to reach Santa

After all these years in the Santa Letter business, we're on pretty good terms with the man. He wants as many letters in The Ranger as he can get. The Ranger "Santa section" is part of his Christmas tradition too.

This year, that edition is being published Dec. 24 -- Christmas Eve.

We're hoping to have all the Santa letters a few days before that so that our letter-writing elves can transcribe them properly and meet Santa's newspaper production deadline.

It's never been easier to send your Santa letter. It can be mailed to us at this address: Santa Claus, c/o The Ranger, P.O. Box 993, Riverton, WY 82501.

Or you can drop them in the Santa letter collection box inside our office at 421 E. Main St. in downtown Riverton.

(Some writers just write "Santa Claus, North Pole," and the post office sends those our way, too.)

We'll take Santa letters at our front desk any time, as will our sister newspaper, the Lander Journal, at its office at 332 W. Main St. in Lander.

E-mail to the North Pole

Santa uses e-mail as well, and letters to the jolly old man can be zapped electronically to for publication on Dec. 24 in The Ranger, just in case Santa's e-mail "inbox" gets a little crowded as Christmas nears.

We always do our best to publish late-arriving letters, but to be on the safe side we hope you'll get them to us by around Dec. 20.

One of our proudest local traditions is the publication of hundreds of letters to Santa Claus each year from children who count on The Ranger to give their letters the special treatment they deserve.

Santa feels the same way. Write him.

MAIL SUBSCRIBERS: Wednesday's edition of The Ranger was delivered to the Riverton post office at 3:38 p.m., in time to meet the postal deadline for next-day mail delivery.
