Tigers host Lander tournament

Dec 5, 2013 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

Two straight days of high school basketball games will be played at different gyms in Lander this Friday and Saturday to open the Tiger season.

The games are part of the Lander Invitational.

The varsity teams will use two gyms Lander Valley High School -- Bob Carey Memorial Fieldhouse and the LVHS auxiliary gym.

Junior varsity games are set for the Lander Middle School and the Starrett gyms.

Games start Friday afternoon and continue into Saturday night.

Teams from the Class 3-A West and East division will challenge each other, playing three games in the two day span.

"This is great having this tournament right off the start," Lander girls coach Spike Robinson said. "Last year, we didn't play a home game until January. It will be perfect for us."

Schedule

The Lander boys open the tournament at 3 p.m. Friday vs. Worland at Bob Carey Memorial Fieldhouse.

The Lander girls play at 6 p.m. Friday, also against Worland.

On Saturday, the Lander girls go at 10:30 p.m. with Douglas followed by the boys at noon.

The Douglas girls finished second last year in Class 3-A.

At 3:30 p.m. the Lander girls face Glenrock.

The Lander boys end the tournament at 5 p.m. vs. Glenrock.

"Everybody is working hard," Robinson said. "We are not going to put in a whole lot of stuff early. I think that we are doing fine."

The three seniors for the Tigers are Deja Jones, Ashlyn Schamber and Lily Spoonhunter.

"We are really young this year," Robinson said.

Spoonhunter didn't play last year.

Jones and Schamber lots of time on the varsity floor.

The two seniors are both 5-foot-10.

"We are going to depend on their length a lot," Robinson said.

Junior Keesha Rowan also is back on the basketball court.

"We don't have a lot of depth as far as experience goes," Robinson said. "We have five kids that played a lot of varsity. Everybody else doesn't have a lot of varsity experience."

The Tigers are counting on an up-tempo style to wear down their opponents.

"We will depend a lot on our transitions and fast breaks," Robinson said.
