Two heartbreakers for RHS girls in three games at Cheyenne Invitational

Dec 9, 2013 - By Craig Blumenshine, Staff Writer

For the second time in their young season, the Riverton Lady Wolverines had a lead in the second half and a chance when the final buzzer sounded but couldn't hang on in a 41-38 loss Saturday at Cheyenne Central.

Riverton falls to 0-3, with all three losses coming in the season-opening Cheyenne Invitational.

Savannah Salisbury led Riverton in scoring Saturday with 13, and Camey Fegler added 11.

"We made a run in the middle of the second quarter and led by five at the half. We could very easily be 2-1, but we aren't. We have to learn how to finish games," Riverton head coach Ron Porter said.

Riverton was down by nine late but made a run to create a shot at the buzzer that would have tied the game had it fallen.

It was Riverton's third game in the tournament. On Friday, the Lady Wolverines lost to a solid Fossil Ridge, Colo., team 66-38.

"Fossil Ridge, they compete year in and year out for the Colorado 5-A championship. They are a good team. But we didn't back down. I thought Hannah Hauck really gave us some energy at the defensive end. She got after it," Porter said.

Kiley Ridgway was Riverton's lone scorer in double figures. She finished the game with 13.

"All weekend, Savannah, Camey, Kiley and Maci played consistently throughout the weekend. Today, Savannah played has hard and steady today as she has been in three years," Porter said, adding that Camille Whiteman grabbed key rebounds Saturday for the Lady Wolverines.

The Lady Wolverines will board the bus at 5 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, to travel to Sheridan for a game against the Lady Broncs, one of the best teams in Wyoming, according to Porter.
