Apr 5, 2012 - UW Sports InformationThe nationally ranked Wyoming Cowgirl tennis team will play their final home matches of the 2012 season over the weekend. They will face the TCU Frogs on Saturday, April 7, and the New Mexico Lobos, on Sunday, April 8. Both matches are set for 10:00 a.m. Brown and Gold will be at the matches selling UW merchandise.
The team plus two individuals also continue to hold a ranking in the Campbell's/ITA National Rankings as the most recent rankings came out on Tuesday, April 3.
Wyoming as a team received a national ranking of 59th among 323 schools that participate in Division I women's tennis. They dropped three spots from a week ago. They held a season ranking of 56th last week (March 27), which is the highest ranking ever by a Cowgirl tennis team in school history. The UW doubles team of Simona Synkova and Veronica Popovici are currently 45th overall after entering the spring season as the 44th ranked doubles team in the country. They have a current record of 17-8 overall and 8-7 in dual play.
The Cowgirls hold a 10-7 season record and a 2-1 mark in Mountain West action. They are led by sophomore Veronica Popovici with an overall record of 17-11 overall and a 7-9 dual mark at the number one singles position. Simona Synkova has a 17-12 mark, while freshman Jessica Parizher is 17-13 overall and 11-5 during dual play. Popovici and Synkova are 8-7 in doubles action this spring. Parizher and Silviya Zhelyazkova are 6-7 in dual action along with Alexandra Kovacs and Sasa Nemcova with a 10-8 record.
TCU is 12-5 overall and undefeated, 4-0, to sit in the top spot in league play. They are ranked 41st in the latest ITA poll. TCU holds the all-time series record 11-0. The last time the two teams met was April 16, 2011, as the Frogs defeated the Cowgirls 6-1.
New Mexico Lobos is 7-9 overall and 0-4 in conference play this year. The Lobos will play CSU before facing the Cowgirls. UNM leads the all-time series 14-2. The last time the two teams met was April 15, 2011 as the Cowgirls defeated the Lobos 7-0.
