Lander boys demolish Green River; girls win their matchup 53-44

Dec 11, 2013 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

Everything was in high gear for the Lander Valley High School Tigers boys basketball team Tuesday.

The Tigers steamrolled to an 80-49 victory over Class 4-A Green River to remain perfect on the season at 4-0.

The stretch ended a span of four home games for the Class 3-A Tigers.

"We talked on how we finished in the tournament with Glenrock, and our intensity was way down," Lander boys coach Terry Hopkin said. "The kids were ready to play against Green River."

The Lander girls won 53-44 vs. Green River to start the doubleheader.

The Tiger girls have now won two straight games after starting the season with an 0-2 record.

"We are starting to get back into shape," Lander girls coach Spike Robinson said. "We are a little thin on the bench. The kids have to play a lot, and because of that they are getting into better shape."

Green River is in the Class 4-A West division this year.

"Green River is rebuilding," Hopkin said. "They have a new coach. Give him time. He will put something together."

Lander is in the Class 3-A West.

The first half was close, as Lander gave the visiting team an opportunity to keep in the game.

Early in the second quarter, Green River drilled a 3-pointer to pull within 20-17, and Hopkin to call a quick timeout a minute into the quarter.

After the timeout it was all Lander.

The Tigers picked up the tempo on the defense and ran Green River up and down the court to pull away in the third quarter.

"We got to play a lot of kids against Green River," Hopkin said. "Green River got tired. We played 10 solid kids a lot of the game. That is what we have to do. We have to get four or five kids that can help us if we get into foul trouble. I'm happy with the way our bench is playing and the way our top six guys are playing. They are making passes that they have never made before."

Lander center Cooxoooii Black scored game-high honors with 26 points. Jaxon Hedges registered 21 points, and Hunter Bregar had 10.

"We were just consistent the whole game," Robinson said. "We didn't have a 20-point quarter and then a three-point quarter. We kept scoring the entire game. We just didn't have any big let downs."

Green River made the game close in the fourth quarter with three 3-pointers.

"Green River just made some shots like they hadn't made the entire game," Robinson said.

Keesha Rowan paced Lander with 19 points.

"We were going at the basket more and harder," Robinson said.

Conference next

The Lander boys and girls will open the Class 3-A West conference schedule this Saturday vs. the Lyman Eagles.

"I just keep on telling them to get better every game," Hopkin said.

The games will be the first road tests of the year for the Tigers after playing four straight home games.

The Lyman Eagles boys are 0-3 overall after losing all three games Friday and Saturday at the Lander Invitational.

"We have to be mentally prepared to play," Hopkin said.

The Lyman girls are sitting at 2-1.

"Lyman is a good team," Robinson said. "They probably have a little bit out for us after we knocked them out of the state tournament last year. Lyman is pretty impressive, and they are pretty deep. They have a lot of kids that can play. There is a chance that if we are not in good enough shape, then they could wear us down a little bit. We just have to avoid that."

After Saturday's game, the Tigers host the Lander Classic girls basketball tournament on Friday, Dec. 20 and Saturday, Dec. 21 at the fieldhouse.

The boys play at the Douglas Classic..

The action completes the first month of the season.
