SHS girls win two, lose one in Thermopolis

Dec 11, 2013 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

A 2-1 start was posted by the Shoshoni Wranglers girls basketball team at the Thermopolis Invitational.

The Wranglers picked up a 54-38 win vs. St. Stephen's and edged Thermopolis 29-28.

The setback on the weekend was a 43-32 loss to Tongue River.

The tournament was played Friday and Saturday to begin the season.

"I was very happy with the way we played this weekend," Shoshoni girls coach Max Mills said. "We had the opportunity to play against different defenses and in different situations."

The Wranglers were in control from start to finish against. St. Stephen's.

Olivia Thompson collected game-high honors with 27 points.

"We were behind against Tongue River and had to make a run to try to catch up," Mills said. "In the Thermopolis game, we had a lead late in the game and and had to learn how to hold on for the win."

Thompson had 17 points vs. Tongue River.

"The greatest takeaway from the weekend was the ability to see what we are capable of doing and what we need to work on more," Mills said. "We have a young team this year, so we still have a lot improve on," Mills said.

In the game vs. Thermopolis, the two teams were tied at 2-2 after the first quarter of play.

"From the first to the last game, the team improved the most in two areas -- communication on defense and attacking the basket on offense," Mills said.

The Wranglers are spending this week in practice learning how to break a full-court press.

"We are also continuing to work harder and smarter on the defensive end of the floor," Mills said.

Shoshoni plays Friday and Saturday in the Burns Winter Classic.

"We are excited to see the talent from the 2-A Southeast conference and see how we match up with them," Mills said.

SHS takes on Burns on Friday night.

The Wranglers face Pine Bluffs and Lingle-Fort Laramie on Saturday.
