Wind River girls have no problem with short-handed Dubois

Dec 13, 2013 - By Randy Tucker, Sports Writer

It was a bit of a mismatch Thursday night at Dubois as Class 2-A Wind River picked up its first win of the season in a big way over the 1-A Dubois Lady Rams 58-19.

Wind River jumped on Dubois with back-to-back 20-point quarters to take a commanding 40-7 lead at the intermission.

With just six girls in the program it's difficult when one of those girls misses a game due to illness, which happened Thursday. The game became a study in determination and physical condition for the remaining five.

Dubois head coach Juleen Leseberg used her timeouts judiciously to rest her five players, and the Rams had a late rally in the final period.

"Justin (Walker) was really good to us," Leseberg said. "He changed things up a lot with man and zone defenses and gave us some things to work on."

Wind River had a full roster for the game after missing several key players in last week's Big Horn Basin tournament.

"We were timid the first half and tried to run with them, which wasn't an option for us," Leseberg said.

Alex Wagon paced Wind River with 13 points. The long-range shooting specialist hit a trio of 3-pointers. Macayla Arrington had 10 points in the paint for the Cougars.

Emily Smith had an outstanding game for Dubois, tallying 10 points.

Dubois rallied in the final period, scoring eight points.

"We had a second wind in the fourth and played much better," Leseberg said. "We improved on rebounding, but obviously our free throws didn't," Leseberg said. "We're working through some jitters and getting our confidence."

The Rams host Farson on Saturday, while the Cougars have an early season rematch with Rocky Mountain in Cowley. Rocky edged the Cougars 50-43 just a week ago.
