Dec 20, 2013 - By Craig Blumenshine, Staff WriterThe Riverton Wolverines, with a new point guard and a refined offense, gave the third-ranked Cheyenne East Thunderbirds a fight to the finish but fell short at the buzzer and lost 41-39 Thursday in the first game of the Flaming Gorge basketball tournament.
The game, played at Rock Springs High School, was the first of three games the Wolverines will play in the tournament. Riverton battled Gillette on Friday morning and concludes tournament play Saturday against Class 3-A power Star Valley. The final two games will be played at Green River.
"The kids really improved, and we probably were the better team today," head coach Dick Quayle said.

Austin Patterson, playing his first game after recovering from a late-season football injury, led Riverton with nine points.
"He's a really good basketball player. He will make us a better team," Quayle said.
The game looked as though it was heading for overtime, b, Utah Zach McCord's shot at the buzzer for East spelled doom for the Riverton.
