Wolverine girls can't hold early advantage, fall by 30 in Flaming Gorge opener

Dec 20, 2013 - By Craig Blumenshine, Staff Writer

The Riverton Wolverine girls basketball team jumped out to an early 8-2 lead Thursday but then fell behind and lost to the Cheyenne East Lady Thunderbirds 62-32 in first-day play at the Flaming Gorge Basketball Tournament.

Thursday's game was played at Rock Springs High School. Friday morning, the Lady Wolverines traveled west in Sweetwater County and played Gillette.

The Lady Wolverines will conclude play in the three-day tournament at Green River against Star Valley on Saturday.

Down by six after the first quarter, Cheyenne East hung 33 second-quarter points on the Lady Wolverines to get the easy win.

"We did not make the transition defensively, and we did not box out very well.

"We had talked about it, but talking about it and doing it are two different things. East is athletic," Riverton head coach Ron Porter said.

Porter said the Lady Wolverines were assertive early against the press and distributed the ball well.

But early fouls whistled against Riverton's Savannah Salisbury -- one that may have been incorrectly assessed -- broke Riverton's early rhythm. Salisbury had eight points in action limited by foul trouble.

Jensyn Pettit saw her first action of the year for Riverton, scoring 2 points. Camey Fegler had 10 to lead RHS scorers.
