Lander boys still perfect at 7-0 after two tourney wins

Dec 22, 2013 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

A tight 52-49 victory was pulled out by the Lander Valley High School Tigers on Friday night over Rawlins at the two-day Douglas Classic boys basketball tournament.

Lander kept its perfect record in line after a 63-52 win vs. Wheatland on Saturday afternoon.

Lander now stands at 7-0 on the year.

"I don't think that we played really well against Rawlins," Lander coach Terry Hopkin said. "We were bus-weary, but we played well enough to beat them."

Wheatland had beaten Lyman 54-35 on Friday afternoon.

"It was a different type of game with Wheatland," Hopkin said. "We were full-court pressed the whole time. Wheatland is quick and fast. They have some great guards. They have a post player who is a premier player in 3-A."

The Tigers played Douglas in the final game of the tournament on Saturday night.

Wheatland opened the game Saturday with a 12-11 lead after the first quarter.

"The press hurt us the first quarter," Hopkin said. "We were making a lot of mistakes."

In the second quarter, the Tigers came out fast and scored 21 points in the frame while holding their opponent to 10 points.

"We got some easy baskets off their press," Hopkin said. "They backed off a little bit, but not a lot. The second quarter was our big quarter."

Cooxooeii Black had game-high honors with 17 points.

"We played a lot better against Wheatland on the offensive end," Hopkin said.

"Rawlins is tall, and they can shoot the ball," Hopkin said. "They are very physical. They are one of the better basketball teams that I have seen."

Lander outscored Rawlins 19-12 for the tournament-opening victory.

"We played tough against Rawlins," Hopkin said. "We just couldn't put the ball in the hole."

Lander's Casey Winger finished with 17 points, and Jaxon Hedges knocked in 14.
