Wolverine boys scare Gillette, beat Star Valley

Dec 22, 2013 - By Craig Blumenshine, Staff Writer

The Riverton Wolverines boys basketball team used a solid second-half defensive effort to down the Star Valley Braves 54-38 and end the Green River Invitational Tournament on a winning note.

"It could have easily been two and maybe even three (wins) this weekend. I would have never thought that going down, but our kids made a lot of progress," Riverton head coach Dick Quayle said.

Riverton (2-5) will next travel to Laramie on Friday, Dec. 27, for a single game against the Plainsmen.

"I think we are more confident offensively in the stuff we are doing, and our defense has improved. We are understanding where we need to be in terms of stopping and shutting penetration down. I felt like that all of our kids played well this week. I'm very excited," Quayle said.

Against Gillette Friday, the Camels drilled 12 3-pointers in the game to down Riverton 73-67, but Gillette was challenged late by the Wolverines.

"We had them in a little trouble, and they started holding the ball on us with six minutes left. We were down by four, and we had a turnover late, and that was the game. The kids did well," Quayle said.

Gillette was missing three players, including a starter, who were not able to play against Riverton, according to Quayle.

Brandon Fullerton had his best game as a Wolverine with 26 points. Caleb Ogg also scored in double figures with 10, and Chris Quayle added 9.

Against Star Valley, Austin Patterson canned three 3-pointers and led Riverton in scoring with 14 points. Fullerton and Quayle added 13 each.

"Our defense was a little suspect in the first half. It's kind of hard to switch from the real fast-paced game that we had with Gillette and go into a slow, methodical game with Star Valley. We took over the game defensively in the third and fourth quarters. The kids played great basketball," Quayle said.

During the tournament, Riverton's Eoin Meyers placed second to a Green River player in the 3-point shooting contest.
