One win, two losses for WIHS at home

Dec 22, 2013 - By Randy Tucker, Staff Writer

Wyoming Indian withstood some inner turmoil this weekend to go 1-2 in the Foothills Classic against teams from Sheridan and Campbell counties.

The Lady Chiefs fell in a tight contest Friday to Big Horn 56-54 in the tournament and home opener.

On Saturday, defending state champion Tongue River edged Wyoming Indian 63-59 after the Chiefs took a 55-51 win over Wright earlier in the day.

Wyoming Indian head coach Aleta Moss had to realign her game plans without Dailyn Friday and Brindi Lock. Whether either player returns to the team in the future is uncertain.

In the absence of Lock in the post, the Chiefs relied more on their traditional run-and-press style of play, and it was a close contest with Big Horn throughout the game.

The score was tied six times in the opening half and again at 42 with 21 seconds remaining in the third period.

Taylor Harris hit a 3-pointer from the angle to give the Chiefs a modest 45-42 lead, but Wyoming Indian couldn't contain the lead. Big Horn held a tenuous two-point advantage with less than two minutes to play and tried to run out the clock with a 1:48 remaining, but Wyoming Indian pressure and a couple of foul calls sent the Rams to the line. The Chiefs knotted the game when Shaylee Lonedog hit a pair of free throws with 1:09 to go.

Big Horn's Amelia Ponce hit two of four free throws in the final 37 seconds to preserve the win.

The difference in the game came at the free-throw line, where Big Horn hit 25 of 41 attempts. The Chiefs converted 14 of 28.

Against Wright, the Chiefs built an early lead and held on as the Panthers made a slow comeback in the final two periods.

Loveeda White paced Wyoming Indian against Wright with 15 points, including a pair of 3-pointers. Jasmine McGill played well with 10 points.
