Cougar boys win tingler over Tongue River, also beat Wright
Dec 22, 2013 - By Randy Tucker, Staff Writer
It was a tale from the land of the 3-point shot this weekend for the Wind River boys, who finished 2-1 in the Foothills Classic this weekend in Pavillion.
Friday's game came down to a final 3-pointer from sophomore Caleb C'Bearing, as the Cougars squeaked by Tongue River 57-56.
Early Saturday afternoon promised to be a repeat of the night before, but this time C'Bearing's late trey only cut the margin to 68-64, and Big Horn was able to hold off the Cougar comeback to win 72-64.
The late game showed the effects of three games in a row in less than 24 hours on both teams, as the Cougars staggered to a 70-57 win over Wright.
Wind River trailed early, and Tongue River kept the Cougars at bay for much of the second half.
With just 11 seconds to play and trailing 56-54, C'Bearing pulled up off the dribble and drained a long-range trey to snatch the victory from Tongue River.
C'Bearing paced Wind River with 20. The Cougars hit nine 3-pointers, with four coming from C'Bearing, three from Dakota Snyder, and one each by Delshai Roanhorse and Cory Cress.
Theatrics weren't in store against Big Horn, as the larger, stronger Rams were able to limit Wind River's inside game, forcing the Cougars to shoot from outside.
C'Bearing had a season-high 34 against Big Horn, including six from beyond the arc.
In the final game of the tournament the Cougars displayed a little wear and tear in the opening half against Wright. Wind River trailed 10-5 early in the first and couldn't find consistency throughout the first period.
Wind River trailed by seven at the first break but rallied early in the second with pull-up jumpers and long-range shots. Dakota Snyder propelled the Cougars into the lead on a baseline 3-pointer with 7:02 left in the opening half, and Wind River took an 18-16 advantage.
The Cougars improved the margin to 23-16 but a 7-0 run by Wright knotted the game at 23 a late Wind River surge put the home team out in front 35-26 at the half.
With 14 seconds to play in the second period C'Bearing split the Wright defense on a dribble drive, then kicked the ball to the right baseline to Cory Cress, who drained a wide-open 3-pointer for the final points of the half.
The Panthers hung around in the third period and lackluster play on both ends didn't change the teams' relative positions much.
In the final period the Cougars came to life after a 3-pointer from Snyder. Wind River began distributing the ball well, and key shots from Xavier Oats, Bryce Hankins and Brett Roanhorse proved to be the difference in the game.
