Dec 24, 2013 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports EditorErik Horyza lost the 50-yard freestyle in a photo finish.
Erik Horyza chased down a runner-up finish Saturday in the 50-yard freestyle at the Riverton Invitational swim meet.
The Riverton High School swimmer finished the sprint in a time of 23.54 in a photo finish with Simon Niebuhr of Cheyenne South. Niehbuhr was awarded the title in 23.47. The meet was held at the Riverton Aquatic Center with 15 teams in the field.
"Last year, Erik had some shoulder trouble, and he wasn't able to finish the season," RHS coach Jay Dayton said. "Erik has been working with trainer Ross Anderson and getting that muscle around his shoulder built up. It still gives him some pain, but he can participate now. He has a lot of natural talent. The strengthening of the upper body has helped him."
Horyza also was fifth in the 100-yard freestyle in 54.12..
"He isn't in any kind of swimming shape yet," Dayton said. "Once we get there he will even go faster. We have a lot of improvement coming ahead of us. That is really encouraging to see Erik at this point."
"With nine boys, I thought that we did extremely well," Dayton said.
The Wolverines came in eighth at 80 points in the team standings. Casper Kelly Walsh claimed the team title by rolling up 258 points. Gillette finished second (186 points) and Laramie was third (179),
"We pretty much had all the teams in the state there," Dayton said. "It was a big meet. The competition was good."
"I have four boys that are very competitive in Erik, Baylor Beers, Travis Fisher and Tyler Matsen," Dayton said. "The good thing is that they have picked off where they were at the end of last season. I feel like we are picking up where we ended last season."
Fisher, Matsen, Beers and Horyza placed fifth in the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:38.21. Kelly Walsh won the race after a time of 1:30.11.
"I was really surprised that we went that fast in the 200-yard freestyle relay," Dayton said.
Matsen brought home fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:07.11 and was seventh in the 100-yard butterfly (1:01.93). Fisher earned seventh place in the 100-yard backstroke (1:01.82).
The Wolverines will continue to practice over the holiday season.
"We have one long practice a day," Dayton said. "Right now, it's a little bit of a rest cycle because we have pushed it hard for three weeks. We will hit it hard with two-a-days in January."
RHS competes at the Laramie Invitational this Friday and Saturday.
"It won't be a huge meet because it's just right around Christmas," Dayton said. "Some of the teams are half of what they usually are."
