CWC women edged in close one by Gillette

Jan 9, 2014 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

Positive steps were taken by the Central Wyoming College Rustler women's basketball team in a 66-61 loss to Gillette College on Wednesday night at Rustler Gym.

The setback dropped CWC to 0-4 in the Region IX North sub-region.

The Rustlers were coming off a 71-46 loss to Western Wyoming Community College on Saturday night.

"We did a lot of good things against Gillette College," CWC women's coach Serol Stauffenberg said. "I thought we executed on offense. That has been one of our biggest issues up to this point, because we were forcing bad shots and bad passes. Our defense never had a chance to recover in previous games. It's tough to defend breakaway layups."

Gillette raised its conference mark to 3-1 on the season.

"Gillette is a very good team," Stauffenberg said. "We are just right there. We were playing with a whole bunch of undersized freshmen."

The Rustlers challenge Little Big Horn College on Friday at 5:30 p.m. in another sub-region game at Rustler Gym.

"We are going to have to get better each night," Stauffenberg said. "We have to keep games close like we did with Gillette College."

"The defense was the best that we have played all year," Stauffenberg said. "The only issue defensively was rebounding. We gave up too many offensive rebounds. We know that we are short going in."

Gillette College won the rebounding war at 42-39.

"We struggled buying a bucket late in the game," Stauffenberg said. "We had six or seven layups that were in and out. We struggled to get to the line, and Gillette lived at the line. Those are things that you can't control."

In the final stages of the contest, CWC's Kiara Skinner hit a critical 3-pointer to pull the home team within 58-55 with four minutes left in regulation.

The basket from Skinner was as close as CWC could cut it.

Gillette College ended the game going 23-29 from the free throw line.

CWC was 10-19. The Rustlers registered seven 3-pointers in the loss.

Jolanna Sazue had a pair of 3-pointers and finished with 12 points. Skinner contributed 11 points, and McKenley Helstern had 10 points.
