Former Lander resident Richard Joseph Steckbauer, of Truth or Consequences, N.M., died Tues-day, Feb. 28, at Mountain View Regional Medical Center in Las Cruces, N.M.

He was 78 years old.

A memorial service was Monday, March 12, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish in Truth or Consequences.

Richard Joseph Steckbauer was born Oct. 17, 1933, in Berlin, Wis., to Joseph Steckbauer and Anna (Trebitosky) Steckbauer.

While working for U.S. Steel at the Atlantic City operation in Wyoming, he met his wife Jane (Yamamura) Steckbauer.

They have since lived in Wisconsin, Hawaii and they retired to New Mexico in 1998 from their leather business in Michigan.

They were married for 46 years and have five children, six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

He is survived by his wife, Jane Steckbauer; his sons, Lester Steck-bauer and wife Melissa, Damian Steckbauer and wife Kristin, and Brady Steckbauer; his daughters, Christy Flynn, and Josie Gutierres and her husband Jason, his grandchildren and great-grandchild.
