Wolverines 2-1 for the weekend

Jan 13, 2014 - By Craig Blumenshine, Staff Writer

Riverton lost to Sheridan, then beats Laramie and Cheyenne South in the Bill Strannigan East vs. West tournament.

After a tough first-day loss to Sheridan, the Riverton Wolverines boys basketball team stormed back to beat Laramie 62-53 Friday and destroy Cheyenne South 62-39 Saturday to end the Bill Strannigan East vs. West tournament with a 2-1 record on their home floor at Wolverine Gym.

In their second game of the tournament Friday night, the Wolverines handled the physical play of Laramie to complete the season sweep of the Plainsmen.

Laramie (2-8) jumped out to a quick 8-2 lead, but buckets by Austin Patterson, Brandon Fullerton and Caleb Ogg on consecutive possessions tied the score at 8-8 as Riverton (5-6) got back in the game.

The Wolverines struggled midway through the second quarter and, after committing four consecutive turnovers, found themselves trailing by eight with 2:15 to play in the half after Laramie's Drew Burman scored two of his game-high 31 points.

Caleb Ogg's bucket had Riverton down by four at the half.

Second-quarter comeback

As the third quarter started, Patterson found his stride. The senior guard, who struggled with foul trouble the night before against Sheridan, scored six straight to knot the game at 29-29, and his second 3-point goal of the game at the start of the fourth quarter propelled the Wolverines with a lead they would never surrender. Patterson finished with a team-high 16 points.

Myron Oldman, playing in just his second game of the season for Riverton, also scored in double digits with 12.

"Myron is so active inside. He really gets after it, and he is so aggressive going to the boards. He really helps us," head coach Quayle said.

Finishing strong

Three Wolverine players tallied double digits Saturday. Fullerton led all scorers with 15, and Patterson and Jordan Yowell both added 10.

Riverton's defense held the Bison to single digits in three of the first four quarters, and after a 17-6 run in the second quarter, Riverton was able to go deep in its bench for much of the second half.

"It was a great weekend. Again, we are progressing. To come out today and play sound defense and take away everything they wanted to do was good. It was a great team effort," Quayle said.

Tristan Ortiz took three charges in the game.

The Wolverines host cross-county rival Lander this Thursday, Jan. 16, in a 7:30 p.m. tipoff at Wolverine Gym.
