Next up for the Lady Wolverines is county rival Lander on Thursday.

The Riverton Lady Wolverines girls basketball team fought from behind to down Laramie 48-44 Friday, then dominated Cheyenne South 56-26 from the opening tip Saturday to complete the Bill Strannigan East tournament with a 2-1 record.

Saturday's win is the second time this season that Riverton (4-7) has won back to back games.

"I've thought for three years that we would be able to do this eventually, and we are a lot closer now than we have ever been. It is a process," Riverton High School head coach Ron Porter said.

Late explosion

Against Laramie on Friday night, Savannah Salisbury exploded for all of her 13 points in the fourth quarter to power the Lady Wolverines over the Laramie Lady Plainsmen 48-44.

It was Riverton's second win over the Lady Plainsmen (5-5) this season.

With here team trailing by as many as nine during the game and by seven when the final quarter started, Salisbury scored 11 consecutive points in less than three minutes to help pull Riverton within one at 35-34.

Kiley Ridgway connected on one of two free throws to give Riverton its first tie, and Camey Fegler's right baseline drive gave the Lady Wolverines their first lead at 37-36 with 3:35 left to play.

Fegler, who also scored 13, expanded the lead to 39-36, and Jensyn Pettit's free throw kept Riverton in front at 40-38.

Laramie tied the game at 40-40, but Ridgway, who pulled down a game-high 15 rebounds, scored to give Riverton the permanent lead.

Late-game hustle

With 1:50 left to play and Riverton with possession, the Lady Wolverines executed a slow-down offense. Deni Lou Nicholls's hustling offensive rebound kept possession for the Lady Wolverines. Fegler added three key free throws down the stretch to seal Riverton's third win of the season.

Easy win

The Lady Wolverines treated Saturday's home crowd to a dominating start, erupting for an 18-0 lead after one quarter. They never looked back.

"Our program really took a positive step this weekend, sophomores on up. We really like the unselfishness that was demonstrated by our teams. We played with a lot more passion," Porter said.

Salisbury again led Riverton in scoring with 15 points. Fegler and Ridgway both added 14.

"The distribution and energy at the defensive end was what we hoped to do. Once we get everyone on the same page, we can be pretty effective," Porter said.

In sub-varsity play, the junior varsity ended the tournament with a 2-1 record, and Riverton's sophomore's also went 2-1.

The Lady Wolverines are at home again this Thursday against county rival Lander. Game time is 6 p.m. at Wolverine Gym.
