Jan 16, 2014 - By Craig Blumenshine, Staff Writer

The Riverton Wolverine swim team made a trek north for meets in Cody and Powell last Friday and Saturday after enduring a longer than normal holiday break.

Riverton had been scheduled to swim in Casper on Jan. 4, but the Wolverines could not make it to the meet due to impassable roads.

At Cody on Friday, the Wolverines placed fourth in the meet with a small group of swimmers behind Lander, Powell and Cody.

Tyler Matsen won Riverton's only individual title, swimming to a first place finish in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:00.84.

Justyn Root placed second in diving with a total score of 178.65 points, and Travis Fisher and Matsen each placed second 500-yard freestyle (5:36.69) and 100-yard backstroke (1:05.57) respectively.

Fisher also grabbed third in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:04.76. Baylor Beers placed fourth in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 59.05. He was ninth in the 50-yard freestyle (26.49).

In the 100-yard freestyle, Nicholas Bench placed 10th (1:04.99), Root placed 11th (1:05.68) and Adrian Cook placed 12th (1:06.69).

Romelo Cortez scored points for Riverton with his ninth-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:20.72.

Riverton's best relay finish was third in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Team members were Fisher, Beers, Bench and Matsen.

Saturday in Powell, Matsen won twice, this time in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:15.29, and in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:06.8.

"Tyler worked hard over the break. Their times are right there where they were at state last year. I was happy with Tyler," head coach Jay Dayton said.

Teammate Travis Fisher also grabbed a first place in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:00.69.

Other point scorers for Riverton included Fisher placing third in the 100-yard backstroke (1:03.57), Root fourth in diving (155.15 ), Beers eighth in the 100-yard butterfly (1:08.38) and 10th in the 100-yard backstroke (1:08.04).

Lander won the meet with 310 points, while Riverton finished fifth with 137 points.

The Wolverines travel to Cheyenne this weekend for a pair of meets. Riverton swims Friday at Cheyenne East, and Saturday the Wolverines hit the pool at Cheyenne South.

RHS swimmer and state qualifier Eric Horyza was not able to compete over the weekend but is scheduled to return to competition after the Cheyenne meets.
