Jan 27, 2014 - By Randy Tucker, Staff WriterWind River's girls picked up a split in Southwest 2-A basketball conference play last weekend on the road in Lincoln and Sublette counties. The Cougar girls dropped their first conference game Friday to Kemmerer, 57-39, but the girls rebounded to an 11-point win Saturday over Big Piney, 51-40.
The split moves the Cougars into second place in the Southwest with a 3-1 conference mark.
The Cougars were without leading scorer Lexy Brown, who is taking a four-game suspension for violating team rules.
Foul trouble further complicated the rotations for head coach Justin Walker, with Josee Vogel picking up three quick whistles in the opening period.
"We had way too many turnovers in the game," Walker said.
Kemmerer is the defending state 2-A volleyball champion and is a quick, athletic team with average size but above-average athleticism.
The Rangers hit the Cougars with a full-court press early and built quick lead, but Wind River stayed close until the half.
Kemmerer tallied 38 points in the second half to pull away from Wind River.
Walker had praise for senior post Macayla Arrington.
"Macayla is playing great basketball. On most teams the post comes out of the game often, but Macayla played the entire game without a break," Walker said.
He also noted the play of Vogel and Tory Thoman.
"Josee's minutes really helped us, and Tory continues to play solid basketball," Walker said.
"Kemmerer has speed and quickness but it will be a different game when we play them at our place."
Wind River travels to Shoshoni next Friday for their second meeting of the season.
