No losses yet for Lander boys in league

Jan 27, 2014 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

The Lander Tigers pounded Pinedale 60-44 Thursday night in a Class 3-A West conference boys basketball game on the road.

The victory was the only game on the schedule for the Tigers last week.

Lander remained perfect in the conference at 5-0 and rose to 11-2 on the season. Pinedale is 0-6 in league and 0-13 on the year.

"I thought our defense played as hard as they have all year," Lander coach Terry Hopkin said.

Lander allowed just four points to Pinedale in the first half.

"I feel the team as a whole played very well on defense," Hopkin said. "Offensively, our rebounding and lots of assists was the key. We had a lot of putbacks for two points."

"I don't know how weird it is, but it's hard on the student-athletes getting home then having to get up and to get to school," after a two-hour-plus road trip, Hopkin said. "That's hard on everyone."

Big trip

The Tigers already have started preparing for their huge road trip this weekend to Cody and Powell.

Lander challenges Cody on Friday night, then Powell on Saturday afternoon.

"We need to play well and let them know we are for real," Hopkin said.

Lander won both games last year on the road trip.

"We would like to come away with a couple of wins," Hopkin said. "We would love to repeat that feat."

Cody is ranked No. 1 in the Class 3-A boys basketball poll.

"It will be tough, and we know that," Hopkin said. "We will work hard all week preparing so we can compete at our best. This is what we have been working for, to get a shot at the No. 1 team in the state. Powell is always tough to beat at home.
