Jan 28, 2014 - StaffJoseph A. Secrist, formerly of Pavillion, died Sunday, Jan. 26, 2014, at his home in Thermopolis after a battle with cancer. He was 70 years old.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, at Warm Valley Baptist Church in Pavillion. Burial will follow at Mountain View Cemetery in Riverton.
Joseph A. Secrist was born Dec. 12, 1944, in Bonner's Ferry, Idaho. He graduated high school and then joined the U.S. Army. He served three tours in Vietnam.
He married his first wife, Avis, in 1966, and the couple had three children, Monica, Sean and Matthew. Avis died several years later.
On Nov. 6, 1996, he married Janet (Rogers) Rutter. They began their lives together as itinerant missionaries all over the United States, filling in as temporary pastors, teaching and working with children, before moving back to Pavilion where they ministered to the community in various capacities.
The couple moved to Thermopolis in the fall of 2011, where Mr. Secrist worked as a temporary pastor at the Roundtop Baptist Church. He later was called to be the church's permanent pastor.
He is survived by his wife, Jan; children Monica (Secrist) West and her husband James; son Sean Secrist; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Avis; son Matthew; and brothers and sisters.
