Jan 30, 2014 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports EditorSean Watts and Shepp Campbell each earned a third-place finish for the Riverton Wolverines Saturday at the Stadium Grill High School Open indoor track meet in Spearfish, S.D.
Ashtyn Leisy checked in fourth in the long jump for the RHS girls and broke the RHS indoor record.
Leisy was measured at 15-10.50 in the long jump.
The old record was held by Shanae Lawson at 15-6.
The competition featured the majority of the indoor teams from Wyoming.
"Ashtyn hasn't been in a practice pit this year except for at the meet," RHS coach Tawn Gopp said.
Watts produced his high finish in the 60 meters, timed in 7.31.
"Sean is having a strong season," Gopp said. "We made some adjustments on his starts. He was having a false step. We changed that and that moved him up a little bit."
Tichun Apperspach from Gillette had the best time at 7.22.
"The Gillette runner is running pretty fast right now," Gopp said.
There nearly 100 runners in the 60 meters, which took many heats to complete.
The Wolverines ran the 55 meters in Gillette last week. Officials changed it to 60 meters because it was on an indoor track at Black Hills State University.
Campbell cleared the bar at 5-foot-9 in the high jump.
"Shepp can go 6-2," Gopp said. "The problem is that we don't have a place for him to practice. The only time that he is getting over the bar is at the meet. He is jumping well with very little pit time. I'm hoping when the weather clears up we can get him more time" (outdoors).
No team scores were kept.
"We had a pretty good showing at Spearfish," Gopp said. "Some of the kids stepped up to that next level and competed well. Most of them improved their times."
Black Hills State recruits in Wyoming.
"It's nice for our kids to run over there to get exposure to the college," Gopp said.
The Wolverines are scheduled to take this weekend off from competition.
RHS next runs on Saturday, Feb. 8, at a high school meet in Laramie at the University of Wyoming.
