Conference-topper Natrona beats RHS girls

Jan 31, 2014 - By Craig Blumenshine, Staff Writer

The loss broke Riverton's five-game winning streak.

For one quarter of Thursday evening's Class 4-A West girls basketball game, the Riverton Lady Wolverines went toe to toe with the conference favorite Casper Natrona Fillies. But an 11-0 Natrona run as the second quarter started was the beginning of the end as Riverton (7-8, 1-1 Class 4-A West) fell to Natrona (9-4, 3-0 Class 4-A West) 46-24 and saw its five-game winning streak come to an end in Wolverine Gym.

Stanford-bound and returning Wyoming Gatorade Player of the Year Kaylee Johnson led all scorers with 13, below her state-leading 17.5 points per game average, and also pulled down 12 rebounds. Lexi Switzer, who canned two 3-pointers, also scored in double digits for the Fillies with 10.

Riverton was led in scoring by Savannah Salisbury with 11 points. Kiley Ridgway, who averages 12 points per game, was held to just two points but pulled down 10 rebounds.

Jensyn Pettit had an offensive rebound and putback to get Riverton on the board first, and Salisbury scored four to knot the score at 6-6 after the first quarter.

"We created a little bit of confusion for Natrona's offense and took them out of some things they like to do. We got a little frustrated, but we are not into moral victories. I do not think we played very well -- even remotely as well as we can," Riverton head coach Ron Porter said.

As good as its offense can be, Natrona's defense caused more trouble in the form of 24 turnovers for Riverton.

"Their length caused us problems," Porter said.

The Lady Wolverines wore light blue jerseys and shorts for the game instead of their normal red and white to bring attention to men's health issues.

The Lady Wolverines travel to Casper on Saturday to challenge the Kelly Walsh Lady Trojans. The Class 4-A West conference game is set to tip off at 1 p.m. The game can be heard live on KVOW 1450 AM.
