CWC men hang on for 73-70 win over Dawson after loss to Little Big HornFeb 4, 2014 By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor
The Rustlers return home on Wednesday night to play Western Wyoming College, which is fresh off a win at Casper College last Saturday afternoon.
After being surprised by Little Big Horn College 80-70 Friday night on the road, the Central Wyoming College Rustlers came back for a 73-70 Region IX men's basketball win on Saturday over Dawson Community College.
Both games were played in Montana.
The Rustlers sit at 11-12 overall and 5-6 in Region IX play.
"Every win is important," CWC coach Pat Rafferty said. "There are no easy games in the region.
"We have done some good things and lost. We need to stay positive and not get discouraged. We just have to learn from our experiences and learn from every game that we have.
We need to be playing our best basketball the last few weeks of the season."
The Rustlers host Western Wyoming College on Wednesday night.
Tip is set for 7:30 p.m. at Rustler Gym. Western beat Casper College on Saturday in Rock Springs.
"The game with Western will be tough," Rafferty said.
"They have good size and good balance.
We have to show up and have a good focus about us."
Daryle Morgan Jr., and Eimer Lopez led CWC scoring Saturday. Morgan paced the team with 20 points, and Lopez had 18.
The Rustlers looked strong in the first half, taking a 40-33 halftime lead, but Dawson outscored CWC 37-33 in the final 20 minutes to make things exciting down the stretch.
"We did not manage the last minute and a half very well," Rafferty said.
"We just had some brutal turnovers. We gave Dawson a window of opportunity and they took advantage of it.
Those are the things you have to stay clear of."
CWC had eight 3-pointers and was 11-17 from the free-throw line.
In Friday's loss, Little Big Horn controlled the tempo. "We didn't play with energy," Rafferty said. "With a team like Little Big Horn, we have to come with a really good focus."
