Feb 11, 2014 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports EditorFreshman wrestler Palmer Schafer placed third Saturday in the highest finish for the Lander Tigers at the Ron Thon Memorial Invitational at Wolverine Gym.
Schafer ended the double-elimination tournament edging out Trey Fischbach from Moorcroft 5-2 for his spot on the medal stand.
Schafer won his quarterfinal match 11-5 against Green River's Cyro Montoya.
"Palmer had a great tournament," Lander coach Nick Fulton said. "There is no shame to finish third at the Ron Thon as a freshman. The two kids that finished ahead of him were state medalists. We are right in that category with them."
Jake Thompson from Star Valley pulled out a 11-5 win over Schafer in the semifinals.
The Tigers had a better showing on Friday than Saturday.
"We had a great first day," Fulton said. "For the most part I thought that we wrestled pretty well. We brought a lot of intensity to the matches and wrestled pretty hard."
In the early morning rounds on Saturday, the Tigers dropped three tight matches.
"It was a tough round to go through," Fulton said. "It put some of the kids out."
Andrew Von Rein was on track for a spot in the semifinals in the Ron Thon at 138 pounds, but he lost a double-overtime decision 5-2 to Lance Lucas from Wheatland.
"Gillette's Logan Wagoner pinned Von Rein in 2:36 in the consolation round.
"Andrew will be just fine because he is a veteran kid," Fulton said. "Andrew is focused."
