A split last weekend by the Shoshoni Wranglers girls basketball team has No. 2 seed in the Class 2-A Southwest conference up grabs. Shoshoni took care of Big Piney 46-27 but lost to Kemmerer 69-40. "That win over Big Piney helped us to be in a position to avoid the pigtail game," SHS coach Max Mills said. In the Southwest standings, Kemmerer is first at 5-0. Wind River has a 3-2 mark. Shoshoni sits at 3-4 in league play, and 10-10 overall. Big Piney is winless at 0-5. Mills said this is a key weekend for the other teams in the Southwest conference. Kemmerer and Big Piney play at Wyoming Indian and Wind River Friday and Saturday. "Those games will go a long way to determining seeding for the regional tournament," Mills said. The Wranglers play at Thermopolis on Friday night in a non-conference. Road split The Wranglers kept Big Piney in check to complete the regular season sweep. "We put a lot of emotion and energy in the game at Big Piney," Mills said. "The final score doesn't indicate how close the game actually was. It was their Senior Night, and their seniors played well from start to finish." Three Shoshoni players did most of the scoring in the win. Raine Pingetzer had a team-high 18 points. Olivia Thompson dropped in 16 points, and Annika Dechert scored nine. "We had girls come off the bench and contribute at key times, and the entire game truly felt like a cohesive unit fighting for a common goal." Saturday was a different story for the Wranglers. Kemmerer had both the outside and inside game clicking in the 29-point victory. "Our team was so tired from the emotion and energy spent on Friday night that we did not play tough defense on Saturday," Mills said. "They are a good team with a lot of depth that we could not overcome."
